Third Grade Objectives

 

SCIENCE (E.C.A.)

 

Earth Science

  ·  Identifies properties of rocks and minerals
  ·  Knows each mineral is composed of only one substance, that substance is the same in all
      samples of the mineral

Life Science

  ·  Identifies life cycle of many plants
   ·  Knows flowering plants must be pollinated
   ·  Knows plants are pollinated by bees
   ·  Recognizes that one seed produces one plant; one plant may produce many seeds


Physical Science

    ·  Identifies physical and chemical properties of common household chemicals
    ·  Classifies acids, bases and neutrals on the basis of their reactions with red cabbage juice
    ·  Knows sounds are produced by vibrating objects and vibrating columns of air
    ·  Identifies two characteristics of sound as pitch and volume
    ·  Knows human ear has a membrane that vibrates when sound reaches it
    ·  Knows that sound is produced by the human vocal cords as air moves through the tightened cords

 

MATHEMATICS (A Beka)

    ·   Whole Numbers
    ·   Reads and writes numbers from 1-1,000
    ·   Identifies greater than, less than, and equal and the symbols for each
    ·   Reads/ writes Roman Numerals to 1,000
    ·   Operations
    ·   Adds and subtracts to 100,000 place with and without regrouping
    ·   Multiplies any 1-4 digit factor by a two-digit factor
    ·   Knows multiplication and division facts 1-12
    ·   Checks multiplication problems
    ·   Averages numbers
    ·   Measurement
    ·   Knows English and Metric measures of length, liquid capacity, temperature
    ·   Knows English dry capacity measures
    ·   Knows value of coins and bills
    ·   Fractional Numbers
    ·   Knows a fraction is a part of a whole
    ·   Knows terms numerator and denominator
    ·   Adds and subtracts fractions with common denominators
    ·   Geometry and Spatial Sense
    ·   Recognizes various geometric shapes
    ·   Identifies a right angle
    ·   Problem Solving
    ·   Solves story problems with all 4 processes
    ·   Knows terms: clue words and process
    ·   Algebraic Concepts
    ·   Finds missing numbers in mathematical problems using all four processes
    ·   Knows process order
    ·   Solves simple equations

    ·  Knows that Ben Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Daniel Boone, Noah Webster, and
       John Greenleaf Whittier were all involved with the Revolutionary War

    ·  Knows about Robert E Lee, Abraham Lincoln, Clara Barton, Ulysses S Grant, and Louisa May Alcott

 

BIBLE (ACSI)

    ·  God’s Love for Mankind
    ·  Knows God’s plan of redemption
    ·  Understands God has a purpose for each life
    ·  Knows that Jesus was fully God and fully man
    ·  Classifies books of the Bible
    ·  Understands the significance of the events leading to Jesus’ death on the cross
    ·  God’s Guidance for Mankind
    ·  Identifies, names and knows how Jesus called his Apostles and demonstrates this knowledge
    ·  Knows that God gifted the apostles with miraculous powers
    ·  God’s Mission for Mankind
    ·  Understands the empowerment of the Holy Spirit

Reading

    ·  Uses phonics rules when deciphering an unknown word
    ·  Varies tone and pitch when reading
    ·  Uses context clues where possible
    ·  Recalls text information
    ·  Recalls the following: characters, setting, plot, main idea, dialog, indicators of time and order
        conflict resolution

    ·  Reviews point of view
    ·  Knows how to browse text, activate prior knowledge, set reading goals
    ·  Recalls and uses sight words, homonyms, synonyms, antonyms and dictionary skills
    ·  Recognizes various forms of fiction and non-fiction

Spelling

   ·   Knows how to spell high frequency words
    ·   Recalls prefix and suffix additions to root words
    ·   Reviews spellings containing various phonetic patterns
    ·   Correctly identifies and spells homonyms 


Writing

   ·   Knows nouns, verbs, adjectives and articles
    ·   Understands synonyms, antonyms, and homonyms
    ·   Identifies three sentence types
    ·   Practices subject/verb agreement
    ·   Uses dictionaries, encyclopedias, computers, thesaurus and peers
