Second Grade Objectives

 

SCIENCE (E.C.A.)

·        Identifies different stages of a butterfly’s life cycle

·        Knows that butterflies lay eggs that hatch into larvae

·        Knows what caterpillars need to live

·        Identifies the properties describing solids, liquids, and gas

·        Knows that water freezes to a solid then melts to a liquid

·        Knows substances can change appearances

·        Recognizes that some solids will dissolves in water

·        Understands that balance is affected by weight and the position of a fulcrum

·        Knows that weighing is the process of balancing an object against a standard unit

·        Understands different types of soil

·        Understands how soil helps seeds to grow

 

MATHEMATICS (A Beka)

·        Understands money, degrees, even and odd numbers, and ordinal numbers to fifty

·        Determines place value up to hundred thousands place

·        Computes addition and subtraction problems requiring regrouping with up to 3 digits

·        Solves multiple digit addition problems using carrying up to the thousands place

·        Solves multiple digit subtraction problems using borrowing

·        Orders coins and bills from least to greatest

·        Adds and subtracts monetary amounts

·        Identifies time in hours, half hours, quarter hours, and five-minute intervals

·        Names fractional parts of a whole

·        Measures to nearest inch and centimeter

·        Learns liquid measures

·        Uses various types of graphs

·        Identifies plane, solid, and 3-D shapes

·        Identifies and draws lines of symmetry

·        Finds perimeter

·        Reads scale drawings

 

SOCIAL STUDIES (A Beka)

 

Map Skills/Geography

·        Demonstrates a basic knowledge of America and its physical position in the world

·        Locates and names the oceans that border the U.S.

·        Identifies Mexico, England and Canada on a world map and globe

·        Defines the Mississippi River as the longest river in the U.S.

·        Identifies and names the 50 states

·        Identifies and locates the Great Lakes

 

History

·        Knows and recalls the voyage and the problems of the Pilgrims

·        Identifies details about the US flag

·        Knows why and when we celebrate Patriotic holidays

·        Knows about communities and how to become a better citizen

 

LANGUAGE ARTS (A Beka)

·        Writes one or more paragraphs on a topic

·        Uses contractions and possessives

·        Alphabetizes words beyond the third letter

·        Identifies main ideas

·        Identifies subject, verb, and object in sentences

·        Uses correct punctuation

·        Uses capitals correctly

·        Writes a series of sentences about a topic

·        Improves penmanship skills

·        Answers questions with sentences

·        Forms compound words

·        Adds suffixes and prefixes to root words

·        Writes thank you notes

·        Compiles lists

 

READING (Open Court)

·        Reads for comprehension and to learn facts

·        Understands syllabication of words

·        Identifies telling, asking, and exclaiming sentences

·        Selects main ideas of reading selection

·        Identifies incorrect words in sentences and chooses correct ones

·        Understands singular and possessive

·        Draws conclusions and makes inferences from implied information

 

SPELLING

·        Spells words correctly

·        Matches vocabulary words and definitions

·        Alphabetizes words

·        Recognizes sequential order

·        Abbreviates days and months

·        Abbreviates personal titles

·        Knows sight words and spells them correctly

·        Knows and uses weekly word lists

 

BIBLE (ACSI)

·        Understands the Christmas story and its characters

·        Understands the Easter story and its characters

·        Knows why Christ came to earth

·        Understands why Christ was God and yet died for our sins

·        Identifies and demonstrates our need to have Christ in our hearts and lives

·        Identifies steps to share Christ with others

·        Memorizes and recites weekly Bible verses that relate to character development

·        Prays for each other’s requests
